Targeting Companies
Directly targeting companies for which you’d like to work is one of the best ways to find a job you’ll be happy with. Maybe you know people who work at a particular company and rave about their jobs. Or maybe you want to work for the business that’s considered a leader in its field. Targeting allows you to narrow your range and focus your efforts on a particular company.
Once you have targeted and researched a company, there are several approaches you can take:
- Network to find someone who works at the company and can give you the inside scoop on whether they’re hiring or to find someone willing to give you an informational interview.
- Call the human resources department to see if there are any open positions.
- Check the company’s Web site to see what jobs are open.
Note that by narrowing your job search, you’re going to have fewer opportunities to explore. If the company is not currently hiring, you may need to wait, be persistent, and keep yourself open to other options until something does open up.
